For the uninitiated, Janmashtami is the day commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna. It is celebrated on the eighth day of the month of Shravan in the Hindu calendar which corresponds to August or September of the Gregorian calendar. This is a time of celebration, a time when people all across the country come together to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, especially in the holy cities of Mathura-Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh.
This is a time when people visit their nearby Krishna Temples and also enjoy Ram Leela plays that are performed in the neighbourhoods. Hymns and prayers are sung in remembrance of Lord Krishna and many temples also organise recitations of the Bhagvad Gita and other sacred religious texts. For the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra as a whole, there is the tradition of Dahi Handi, where a group of young men, known as Govindas form a human pyramid to break an earthen pot of yoghurt which has been tied at a considerable height. The Govindas need to form more tiers so that they can reach the pot, break it and win a prize.
Nevertheless, Janmashtami is incomplete without having some scrumptious food and sweets. Here at Kailash Sweets, the most famous sweets for this occasion is Rabdi
